The PowerAde CFU Women’s Under-20 World Cup qualifier saw Guyana crushing Antigua and Barbuda 7-0, while the Dominican Republic eased their way to a 5-0 victory in the opening round of Group C action at the Uitvlugt ground yesterday.

Lady Jags goal scorers, from left: Otesha Charles (3rd, 4th, 5th, and 7th goals), captain Ashlee Savona (6th goal), Tessa Edwards (2nd goal), and Elysia Prasad (1st goal)

The first match saw the Dominican Republic swamping Anguilla in what was a one-sided match from the very beginning. Yqaueisi Soriano scored the first goal in the 28th minute. She also found the back of the net in the 46th minute and 54th minutes. Anajaira Burgos was the other goal scorer with the fourth goal in the 60th minute and the fifth in the 88th.

The second match of the double-header, between Guyana and Antigua and Barbuda, saw the spectators come alive as they began rooting for the local girls. The Lady Jags did not disappoint as they took control of the game in the 1st minute when Elysia Prasad scored the first goal. To the excitement and delight of the crowd, the second goal was scored in the 4th minute by Tessa Edwards. Player of the game, Otesha Charles, got past the goal keeper in the 11th, 30th, and 42nd minutes.

Captain Ashlee Savona marked her captaincy with the sixth goal in the 44th minute. The second half of the game saw one goal which was scored by Otesha Charles, her fourth and the seventh of the game.

As much as Guyana registered a huge win, they were not tested enough as the girls from Antigua and Barbuda were laid back throughout the first half.

They tried to be aggressive in the second half but ended up having some of their players injured. It was hard not to notice that almost the entire game was played in front of the Antigua and Barbuda goal since Guyana was constantly on the attack.

After the first round, Guyana and the Dominica Republic registered three points each for their victories, while Anguilla and Antigua and Barbuda remain on zero. On Friday, November 4, Lady Jags will play Anguilla, while Antigua and Barbuda will play Dominican Republic.

And on Sunday October 6, the much anticipated match between Guyana and the Dominican Republic will kick off, while Anguilla goes up against Antigua and Barbuda.
